# Lace®® | wallet — Extension™®

> The extension seamlessly integrates with Ledger Nano S, Nano S+, and Nano X devices, allowing users to sign transactions directly …

**Lace Wallet Extension: A Cardano-Native Light Wallet with Hardware-Grade Security Aspirations—and Clear Limits**

Lace is the browser extension wallet built by Input Output Global (IOG), one of the primary entities behind Cardano, and it has evolved from a simple ADA staking tool into a multi-chain, privacy-aware platform with ambitions that extend well beyond its Cardano roots. Unlike hardware-centric workflows that depend on a separate signing device, Lace operates as a "light wallet" that runs directly in Chrome or Firefox, offering immediate access to decentralized applications, NFT galleries, and staking functionality without requiring a physical companion device . That convenience, however, defines both its appeal and its most important security boundaries.

**From Cardano Staking Tool to Multi-Chain Contender**

Lace's foundation is unmistakably Cardano. The extension provides native support for ADA staking, allowing users to browse stake pools, delegate tokens, and track reward history within the interface . A multi-staking feature enables delegation to up to ten pools simultaneously, though wallets with more than 80 UTXO sets cannot use it due to protocol transaction size limits . The DApp connector opens access to Cardano-based decentralized exchanges, DeFi protocols, and NFT marketplaces, while a built-in gallery lets users view and transfer their Cardano NFTs . A "bundle" feature allows sending multiple asset types to multiple recipients in a single transaction, reducing fees and network congestion .

The wallet's scope expanded significantly with the integration of Midnight, a privacy-focused blockchain that operates alongside Cardano. Lace 2.0 introduced support for both shielded and unshielded Midnight addresses, giving users the ability to choose when transaction details are visible and when they remain private . This dual-environment approach means a single extension can handle transparent Cardano assets and confidential Midnight transactions without requiring separate wallet software . Subsequent releases refined the Midnight experience with improved syncing, raw transaction data visibility before confirmation, and the ability to generate DUST from cNIGHT holdings .

**Hardware Wallet Support: A Bridge, Not a Replacement**

A critical distinction must be made regarding Lace's relationship with hardware security. The extension supports hardware wallets including Ledger, Trezor, Keystone, and SeedSigner, and recent releases have made significant strides in this area. Lace 2.2 added Bitcoin account imports from Ledger and Trezor, allowing users to sign Bitcoin transactions directly through their hardware device while managing native assets from the same application . SeedSigner support was introduced as a fully air-gapped option, using animated QR codes to sign both ADA and Bitcoin transactions without ever connecting the signing device to a computer . Lace 2.4 added support for the latest V8 version of the Cardano app on Ledger .

However, hardware wallet support in Lace is not the same as hardware wallet security by default. The extension remains a hot wallet environment where private keys can be generated and stored in software if the user chooses not to pair a hardware device. Lace 2.4's release notes explicitly addressed a common point of confusion: the hardware wallet import screen now clarifies that importing a recovery phrase creates a software wallet, not a hardware wallet . This distinction matters because the convenience of a browser extension—instant access, no cable, no device—comes at the cost of exposing keys to the host machine's attack surface. Users who prioritize security should pair Lace with a hardware signer rather than relying on the extension's native key storage.

**Privacy and Transparency Features**

Lace has made deliberate choices around transparency. The wallet is non-custodial by design, meaning users control their keys and assets . Transaction details are presented with increasing clarity—Lace 2.4 enhanced the swap review screen to show what leaves the wallet, transaction fees, order destination, collateral, and expiry before confirmation . DApp signing requests were overhauled to queue multiple requests and display clear errors when a request cannot be signed, rather than silently failing .

The Midnight integration represents Lace's most distinctive privacy offering. Shielded addresses allow users to prove a payment was made without exposing their full transaction history, a capability that goes beyond the pseudonymity of standard public blockchains . Lace 2.3 also routed Cardano network requests through the Lace proxy and removed a previously bundled Cardano provider key, a quiet but meaningful privacy improvement .

**What Lace Does Not Solve**

The extension's reliance on a browser environment introduces risks that no amount of UI polish can eliminate. Browser extensions can be compromised through malicious updates, phishing sites can mimic legitimate DApp interfaces, and clipboard-based attacks remain a persistent threat. Lace's security check feature, introduced in version 2.1, offers some diagnostic value, but it cannot substitute for user vigilance . The Firefox listing for Lace, which may lag behind the Chrome version in updates, shows a last update date of January 2026 in its metadata, a reminder that extension distribution channels can create version fragmentation .

Moreover, Lace is not a Bitcoin-first wallet. Bitcoin support arrived through hardware wallet integration rather than native key management, and the extension's primary identity remains tied to Cardano and Midnight. Users seeking a dedicated Bitcoin wallet with robust native features would be better served elsewhere.
